Fashion and Costume in Denmark

The costume collection of the Danish National Museum, Brede, has been accumulated over the past 100 years. It comprises thousands of catalogue numbers, ranging from complete costumes to single pieces, accessories and beauty articles.

Dressed in Time

Visit our online exhibition "Dressed in Time" and get a taste of the actual exhibition at Brede Works. The history of fashion from top to toe, from inside to outside. Almost 200 garments show how the Danes have looked on everyday and festive occasions from the 1700s to the present day.

"Dressed in Time" presents a number of selected costumes, each distinctive in its own way. By no means is it a crash course in the history of fasion but a focus on actual, real-life costumes from certain historical periods. Based on these, we wish to tell actual, real-life stories - stories about the historical importance of the costume, its owner's life, and its own life at the museum.

In other words, the purpose has been to give a deeper understanding of the costumes themselves over and beyond what is immediately conveyed by the presentation and experience of a photo or a visit to the Danish National Museum's exhibition in Brede.
